What is School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports or PBIS?
School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) is a framework or approach comprised of intervention practices and organizational systems for establishing the social culture, learning and teaching environment, and individual behavior supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students. At Vista Verde, our STAR Program of behavioral expectations is a PBIS approach.
S.T.A.R. (an acronym for Safety First, There and Ready, Act Responsibly, and Respect Self and Others) is a schoolwide system of behavioral support, which develops appropriate behaviors in students and fosters a positive school climate. This intervention leads to an increase in academic instruction and learning time. Students are recognized through a series of rewards when they exhibit the expected positive behaviors. Acknowledgement is given in the form of verbal praise, a written message, a STAR card, and STAR assemblies.
